Ashwaganda
Withania somnifera
The root of ashwaganda is used medicinally.
Known as an adaptogen, the root of this herb can increase the body's ability
to withstand physical, biological, emotional and environmental stressors.
The root contains steroidal lactones. It can stimulate thyroid function making it useful
in cases of hypothyroidism.
It calms the central nervous system making it useful in cases of
anxiety and depression.
Like many adaptogens, it increases endurance and stamina in athletes.
It enhances brain function and helps with fatigue.
Studies also show this herb to be useful in male infertility as it increases male sperm count and motility.
This herb brings the immune system into balance, being called an immunomodulator.
Pregnant women should not use this herb. Nor anyone who is sensitive to plants in the nightshade family.
