Asian GinsengAsian Ginseng (Panax ginseng) Araliaceae FamilyThe Ginseng family contains this herb as well as American ginseng and Siberian ginseng. All are adaptogen herbs and are very similar. Asian ginseng is one of the most studied herbs in the world. The Chinese word gin means man and seng means essence. Panax is derived from the Greek pan meaning all and akos meaning cure, or cure-all. The root of the Ginseng plant is used. It contains plenty of active compounds called ginsenosides which are actually triterpene saponins. It is helpful with depression. The Commission E approved ginseng as a tonic for invigoration and fortification in times of fatigue and debility or declining capacity for work and concentration. Many studies have found ginseng to be effective in stimulating learning and memory. This is helpful for the student! The athlete would benefit from the use of the adaptogen propertied as it increases physical capabilities and endurance. It is useful for coffee drinkers suffering from fatigue as it is stimulating for adrenal exhaution. It provides resistance to infection acting as an immunomodulator. It also contains antioxidant effects. In cases of arthritis, this root may be beneficial as it offers anti inflammatory effects. Those with high cholesterol can also benefit from this root as it reduces plasma total cholesterol and triglycerides while elevating HDL levels. As well it acts as a vasodilator.
