Baby Bum Balm, Diaper Rash, How To Make Ointments, Salves

Baby Bum Balm

Make a salve for baby's diaper rash with this anti inflammatory Baby Bum Balm recipe.

With six children and two grandchildren I've had the opportunity to change many a diaper. I've given my daughter some of this Baby Bum Balm and have included it in some baby gifts as well. Not to mention having a pot of it in my house when grandbabies come to stay!

I've done different variations of it but the base stays pretty much the same. I use calendula, plantain, and comfrey in olive oil for the base. You can grow calendula and comfrey in the garden and plantain is easy enough to find in the field. Each of these herbs offer anti inflammatory, soothing properties to baby's behind. Good for those diaper rashes! The oils and beeswax also act as a natural protective barrier between diaper changes.

Using different essential oils will give it different actions. Lavender and chamomile are soothing with antibacterial actions. Tea tree will give some antimicrobial action.

How to make ointments, salves or balms

First you'll need to make an infused oil, and then add beeswax to it to make it solid.
Here's how to do it...
  1. Place the dried herbs in a quart size jar.
  2. Add enough olive oil to cover herbs by a good inch or so.
  3. Screw on lid, label with date and contents and place in dark cupboard.
  4. Give a shake daily.
  5. After 3-6 weeks, strain out herb through old sheet or cheesecloth.
  6. baby-balm
  7. Add beeswax to infused oil and heat gently in a double boiler or in a pyrex measuring cup placed in a pan of gently simmering water.
  8. Once beeswax is melted, let sit for 5 minutes.
  9. Add essential oil and pour into small tins.

Here's a quickie method I've used to get some Baby Bum Balm in an afternoon.

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Turn oven off.
  2. Place herbs and oil in an oven proof bowl and into oven.
  3. Leave in oven for several hours.
  4. Strain out herb.
  5. Proceed with steps 6-8 from above.
