Wasp and Bee Stings Remedies
Plantain Poultice
Using readily available herbs from the wild, bee stings and wasp stings no longer sting!
Now that summer is upon us, the usual annoyances of bee stings, insect bites and outdoor cuts and scrapes are here, too. Want to know some real easy remedies for these annoyances? I'll show you a few common weeds and garden plants that you can use for yourself and your children. Some of them might be right outside your back door!
First, let me tell you a story about my son's experience with one of these herbal plants. We were visiting my sister-in-law late last summer, enjoying the last few days of warm summer weather. My son Joel, was swinging on their tire swing, minding his own business, when a wasp hovered near his head. In a panic he swatted at the wasp and actually swatted it onto his face and it stung him!
We immediately began looking for some Plantain in that rather pristine lawn. Once locating some, I did what any mother of a screaming wasp-stung preschooler would do...
I picked some plantain leaves, put it in my mouth and chewed it! After I had a good mess in my mouth, I took that green lump of leaves and placed it on the sting. In about 10 seconds he quieted down and relaxed against me as I continued to hold him and the plantain poultice on his face. Plantain is great for alleviating the pain from insect stings. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has great emollient qualities. Plantain offers a soothing, lubricating, protective barrier to the skin. When searching for your plantain, look on roadsides. It loves areas that are well trodden and prefers poor soil. Don't pick plantain from areas that have had herbicide sprayed on them. And when you're done with the plantain put it in your compost pile. Give it back to the earth! After that hair raising experience with a wasp, Joel knows what plantain looks like, what it's good for and how well it works! For a more civilized way to treat wasp and bee stings with plantain try this poultice.
