Candida Remedies

Herbs, diet and lifestyle changes are part of these natural candida remedies.

Candida albicans is one of many types of fungi that have taken up residence in our bodies. Usually they are not a problem as our "good" bacteria and immune cells keep this type of fungi from overgrowth.

When the natural balance of our internal flora becomes off-balance, candida is free to grow at will. A high-sugar diet and excessive alcohol gives more food for candida to grow rampantly. We then have a condition called candidiasis. Candida remedies involve changing the diet, nutritional supplements and herbs.

Candida overgrowth can show up in different or all parts of the body. We are most familiar with candidiasis showing up as yeast infections. The tell-tale signs of yeast infections are burning, itching, redness and discharge in the vaginal area.

Thrush, another form of candidiasis is often seen on babies and the elderly. White patches show up in the mouth, around the anus or on the skin.

Systematic candidiasis is candida overgrowth that has spread throughout the entire body with a wide variety of symptoms.

Some factors that can cause this overgrowth of fungi are:

  • Poor digestion and elimination
  • Antibiotic overuse
  • High sugar diet
  • Excessive alcohol
  • Allergies
  • Stress
  • Birth control pills
  • Hormonal changes
  • Weakened immune system
  • Poor liver function

Candida is often associated with:

It's really important to look at addressing the factors that cause candidiasis in the first place. Finding candida cures hinges on identifying and addressing these factors. Unfortunately finding a physician who is knowledgable about yeast related illnesses may be difficult. The following are usually helpful in determining if your symptoms are related to candida overgrowth:
  • The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
  • The American Academy of Environmental Medicine
  • The American Holistic Medical Association
  • American College of Advancement in Medicine

Diet: As stated above sugar and yeast are food for fungi. This would also include any foods with a high content of yeast (alcohol) or molds (cheese and nuts). Avoid these.

Determining what food sensitivities you have and avoiding these are also important.

Supplement your whole foods diet with a good multivitamin and mineral supplement

Antioxidants: such as those found in local organic foods and Vitamin C and E supplements.

Improve Immune System: Learn to deal with stress as this is a major factor in many illnesses besides canididiasis. Get plenty of sleep using some of my suggestions for insomnia. Adaptogenic herbs may be in order if stress is a common way of life for you.

Detoxification: Support the liver with a good liver herb, Milk Thistle.

Probiotics: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are the friendly bacteria needed to support immune function and to keep yeast overgrowth at bay. Replenish with probiotic supplements as well as fermented foods such as plain yogurt and fermented vegetables.

Use antifungal herbs such as the following for candida remedies.

Herbs For Candida

Goldenseal: Some herbs such as goldenseal, barberry and oregon grape root contain berberine. This active compound is a natural antibiotic and inhibits the growth of candida and enhances immune function.

Echinacea is also good as an anti-candida herb. It also enhances immune function.

Garlic: The active ingredient in garlic, allicin, has been shown to have very high anti-fungal effects. Garlic is very powerful against candida.

Oil of Oregano: This potent product is, I believe, the best against fungi. Look for a product with at least 75% carvacrol.

Pau d'arco tea: Pau d'arco has strong antibacterial and antifungal properties. Drink several cups of this tea daily for any type of candida infection.
