Cold Sore RemediesCold sore remedies that are natural and effective.
Cold sores are actually a herpes simplex virus, similar but not the same as the herpes virus
that causes genital herpes. This virus lies dormant in our nervous system and certain things trigger it
to come through the nerve and surface on our face.
I remember my first bout with cold sores. I just had my first child and I erupted in cold sores. And I mean erupted! I didn't know a whole lot about herbal remedies for herpes so I tried the over the counter stuff all to no avail. I just had to ride it out. Since then certain things cause this virus to reactivate with blisters around my mouth and my nose. Cold sores are triggered by stress, low immune function, fever, and viral infections to name a few. Typically it takes 10 days for a cold sore to run its course but the trick is to attack that cold sore at the first signs...a tingling feeling. This usually happens after being ill, run down, or not eating well. Prevention of Cold SoresSince many cold sores are caused by a low immune system, take care to build the immune system during times of illness and stress. What are good herbs for the immune system?
Eat as healthy as possible as that will always be its own prevention. Also, begin treating the cold sores at the first signs of an outbreak. That tell-tale tingling feeling around the mouth or nose. That's the time to start the treatments. Most treatments are anti-viral by nature and will prevent healthy cells from becoming infected. Cold Sore RemediesLemon Balm (melissa officinalis) Beautiful to have in the garden, lemon balm is the first choice for cold sores or any type of herpes outbreak, including genital herpes. It is clinically proven to reduce the intensity, size and number of cold sores. A cream made from 1% melissa extract is used. Some have even used melissa essential oil directly on the cold sore. However, that may be too strong for most, so exercise caution. Steeping a couple teaspoons of lemon balm in a cup of boiling water and applying the cooled tea to the cold sore may also help. Aloe Vera gel This medicinal plant is wonderful to have inside our house and - for those of you in more tropical climates - in the garden. Clinical studies have shown that the aloe plant reduces the time necessary for the blisters to heal. Just break off a bit, squeeze out the gel and mix with a little olive oil. It appears that the oil helps the aloe gel to absorb better. Oil of Oregano I have had much success with Oil of Oregano. This stuff is powerful and will usually clear up my cold sores at the first signs of tingling. Dilute 1 or 2 drops in a teaspoon of olive oil or aloe vera gel and apply to the affected area. Tea Tree Tea tree essential oil is beneficial as an herpes cure. Dilute 1 or 2 drops in a teaspoon of olive oil or aloe vera gel and apply to the affected area. You can get Lemon Balm at Mountain Rose Herbs
