Do we have to talk about constipation remedies?
Unfortunately we do, as we North Americans spend over 725 million dollars a year on over the counter
laxatives! This is a common concern. If you are not having a bowel movement at least once a day you have constipation. As well, the stool may be hard or difficult to pass which may result in hemorrhoids Children can suffer from constipation. Often potty training resistance or fears of going to the bathroom will cause constipation in little ones. Remember to be patient and gentle during this time!
Prevention
Natural RemediesDrink plenty of water and eat plenty of fiber fiber in the form of ground flax seeds, psyllium husks, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Add more fiber slowly to the diet. Get in the habit of having a large raw vegetable salad once a day. Does wonders!
Psyllium husks can be added to the diet as mentioned above or taken in capsule form. Herbal laxative teas in the form of ginger, fennel, or chamomile are great digestive aids. This is good for mild constipation problems and keeps the fluid intake up as well. Children can benefit from these teas also. For children, a gentle counter-clockwise massage on the tummy with a massage oil can help. Try adding a drop or two of lavender essential oil to the massage oil. If the above constipation remedies aren't doing the trick, than it's time to pull out the serious stuff... Cascara sagrada is a very effective laxative. Consume minimal dose and only for as long as needed to prevent any dependency. This herb is not recommended for children and pregnant women, however.
You can get fennel, chamomile, or ginger at Mountain Rose Herbs.
