Cures For IBS

Natural cures for IBS incorporate changing the diet and using soothing herbs.

IBS stands for irritable bowel syndrome and indicates that the colon is not functioning as it should. Excessive contraction of the intestinal smooth muscle is actually what happens in IBS.

Other names for IBS are nervous indigestion, spastic colitis, and mucous colitis and intestinal neurosis. IBS is very common in the Western world due to our diet and lifestyle. The very thing that causes IBS are the things that need to be eliminated.

Common symptoms of IBS are:
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Frequent bowel movements with pain
  • Lots of mucous in the stool
  • Flatulence
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety and depression

IBS is usually caused by:
  • Food sensitivities
  • Low fiber diet
  • Stress

The best ways to support the digestive system is to remove food irritants, lessen stress and employ herbs.

Increase plant foods in the diet to improve on the amount of fiber needed to alleviate the symptoms. Whole foods such as fruits and vegetables and whole grains contain plenty of fiber. As well, you may need a teaspoon or two of psyllium seed husks with plenty of water before bedtime. As always, avoiding processed, refined foods that are laden with sugar is also essential.

Looking to eliminate any food allergies that may be present is another factor to consider. Sensitivites to wheat, corn, dairy products, coffee, tea and citrus fruits are common.
