If I had to wish for only one herb for treating my family's many ailments, I would have to wish for garlic.

Since most ear infections are viral and can cause inflammation in the ear, garlic is my first choice for treating it. Garlic is cheap, easy to come by, antiviral and anti-inflammatory making it perfect in home remedies for earaches. This home remedy will also lessen the pain of earaches and infections.

Studies have shown that garlic oil and other anti-inflammatory herbs are very effective in treating ear infections. This means that many times we can use this ear infection home remedy instead of antibiotics. Easy to make and without the risk of overusing antibiotics!

Infusing the garlic into some olive oil with a little help of some heat draws out the healing properties of the garlic. If you have any of the following herbs available you can add them to the oil as well, just make the garlic half of the mixture...

How to make home remedies for earaches

  • 1 bulb garlic (the whole bulb, not a clove)and other herbs of choice (see above)
  • olive oil, enough to cover

  1. Mince the garlic and herbs of choice.

  2. Place in the top of a double boiler with simmering water in the bottom.

  3. Pour in enough olive oil to cover garlic.

  4. Gently heat for 30-45 minutes.

  5. Let cool to room temperature and strain.

To use:

Caution: Don't use garlic oil inside the ear if you suspect a burst ear drum.

  1. Warm a spoonful of the garlic oil over a candle or other heat source. Not too hot, just warmed.
  2. Suction a bit up into a dropper.
  3. Put a few drops into the ear and massage around the ear. Any excess oil will drain out on its own.
  4. Apply as often as needed.
  5. Store extra garlic oil in the fridge. This doesn't last more than about 3 days in the fridge. By then the ear infections will either have passed or you are on your way to see a doctor about it.
