Gout Home Remedies

Gout home remedies using natural cures and herbs to relieve joint pain and inflammation.

Just what is gout?
Once known as the "rich man's disease" it seemed to affect mainly wealthy men who over indulged in rich, fatty foods and alcohol. However, our modern diet seems to be available to the wealthy and the not so wealthy.

The good news is that Changing Habits in the area of eating can do much to relieve symptoms or prevent an attack.

Cures for gout acknowledge that rich foods aggravate gout pain. As well, unhealthy hydrogenated type oils and refined flours and sugars seem to increase the pain. In fact, when an attack of gout strikes, it's best to only eat raw fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C for several days.

Gout is similar to arthritis. It is a painful condition caused by a build up of uric acid in the blood and tissues and then crystallizes. Uric acid is actually a by product of certain foods. These uric acid crystals are like needles..and they feel like needles when it jabs in the joints. This results in inflammatory arthritis. The symptoms are swelling, pain, redness, heat and stiffness in the joints.

People experience gout most often in their big toe, although other areas around the toe can be affected as well such as the ankle and instep. Fingers, wrist, knees and elbows are common areas of complaint, too.

There appears to be many causes of gout some of which are:
  • poor diet with fatty foods and refined carbohydrates
  • alcohol
  • insulin resistance
  • obesity
  • stress
  • high blood pressure
  • kidney disease
High purine foods, such as red meat, meat broths and gravies, shellfish, sweetbreads, and anchovies, create an excess of uric acid in the blood. The traditional approach for gout home remedies has been to eliminate high purine foods.

Gout home remedies, just as home remedies for arthritis, require looking at the causes of it and trying to eliminate those as well as using remedies that have traditionally been used for inflammation of the joints and to decrease uric acid.

  • Avoid alcohol, as this tends to raise the levels of uric acid in the blood.
  • Drink plenty of water to help with removal of uric acid from the body.
  • Exercise regularily.
  • Maintain a healthy weight by Changing Habits.
  • Eat a whole foods diet high in fiber, with plenty of antioxidants, berries (especially cherries, blueberries and strawberries) which neutralize uric acid, fish as it reduces inflammation, and flaxseeds as it contains lots of essential fatty acids.

Natural Remedies For Gout

Native Remedies has Joint Ease in capsule form. This product contains devil's claw, boswellia, and glucosamine (to support joint health). Highly recommended!

Devil's Claw
Devil's Claw is an herb that has traditionally been used for relieving pain. It is very beneficial as an herbal remedy for gout and arthritis. Devil's Claw is extremely important as a blood purifier.

Boswellia
This Ayurvedic herb is good for reducing inflammation and the swelling and soreness of gout.

Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA)in the form of fish oils and ground flaxseeds are great as an anti-inflammatory and often used for gout home remedies. EFA is also very important in repairing tissues.

Alfalfa
High in minerals and nutrients that really help in reducing uric acid! I would suggest alfalfa in capsule form or as a daily nourishing infusion.

Arnica Ointment
Arnica and cayenne are very beneficial for inflammatory pain in the joints. Both function as analgesics and anti inflammatory herbs. Make this simple ointment from the two. One of the simplest home remedies for gout!

Celery Seeds
This has traditionally been used as a cure for gout. Cook 1 Tablespoon of celery seeds in two cups of water until soft. Strain and drink throughout the day. Don't use this remedy if you are pregnant or have kidney troubles.

White Willow Bark
White Willow Bark contains a compound called salicin which is where our modern day aspirin is derived from. Traditionally white willow bark has been used for pain and inflammation.

The typical approach for cures for gout is to use Colchicine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and cortisone. All of these come with side-effects. Why not speak to your health practictioner about natural remedies for gout?
