Healthy Herbs
Daily Infusions for Health
Healthy herbs can be used in a daily herbal infusion to give plenty vitamins and minerals to our bodies.
I like using healthy herbs in daily infusions. These herbs are like vitamins in a tea cup. They are most known for their nutritive qualities and when taken on a regular basis impart many vitamins and minerals to our systems. The vitamins and minerals are of a nature that make it easier for our body to take in as opposed to pills and capsules.
Daily infusions are different than teas.
When making an infusion, use 1/3 -1 cup dried herb to 1 quart boiling water.
Cap tightly (canning jars work great for this) and let sit for 4-8 hours.
Strain plant material and sip throughout the day.
Make sure to compost the herbs!
Below are some common herbs good for infusions.
Alfalfa Medicago sativa
Containing biotin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, Vitamins B-6, A, C, E and K, as well chlorophyll, niacin, riboflavin, and cobalt this herb is beneficial to people who are convalescing and who are elderly. Very good for a nourishing infusion!
However, caution should be taken for those on blood thinners as the high level of Vitamin K interferes with Coumadin's (blood thinner) anti-coagulant effects.
Nettle Urtica dioica
A nutritional profile in Nutritional Herbology by Mark Pedersen shows that stinging nettle is very rich in calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, potassium, silicon, manganese, and zinc.
This herb is also very good as a reproductive tonic for women, alleviating symptoms of PMS and menopause. It helps strengthen weak kidneys, too.
Oat straw Avena sativa
This herb is mineral and vitamin rich especially in silica, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and iron.
This high mineral content makes it of benefit for those suffering from mineral deficiency or avitaminosis. Most often the elderly or those convalescing will benefit from a daily infusion of this herb.
I love oat straw for its ability to calm me and give a peaceful sleep.
Red Raspberry Rubus idaeus
Red raspberry leaf is very rich in manganese, twice as high as any other herb that was tested in Nutritional Herbology : A Reference Guide to Herbs by Mark Pederson.
This herb is also high in iron, selenium, calcium, and Vitamins A and C, and niacin.
Widely recognized as a female tonic,
red raspberry relieves excess menstrual bleeding.
During pregnancy red raspberry has traditionally been used to treat nausea, spotting and for toning
the uterus in preparation for childbirth.
Be sure to make Pregnancy Tea during pregnancy.
Red raspberry leaves also have an astrigent quality about it making it useful for diarrhea.
