Heartburn Home Remedies and Acid Reflux Remedies

Simple heartburn home remedies and acid reflux remedies that puts out the fire in your chest.

All of us have experienced heartburn or acid reflux, that burning sensation in our chest after a meal, at one time or another. What actually happens is partially digested food and stomach acid go back up into the esophagus. This burns the tissues that are of a more alkaline nature and not used to such strong acid.

The lower esophagal spincter is between our stomach and esophagus. This little guy's job is to allow food through and not let it come back up. If it is weakened it doesn't do a very good job of keeping the food and acid down in the stomach.

There are a number of reasons why this sphincter becomes weakened.

Heartburn and Acid Reflux Prevention

  1. Eat a whole foods diet. Whole foods are natural heartburn home remedies!
  2. Eat slowly in a relaxed atmosphere with good company. Not always easy with little ones!
  3. Don't overeat, even if it is whole foods.
  4. Drink plenty of water for good digestion.
  5. Don't take antacids! This just creates more problems with heartburn called rebound acidity. Acid levels drop below normal with antacids causing the body to increase acid and thus more heartburn.
  6. Avoid coffee and tea as these contain acids.

Peppermint Tea
Taking an enteric coated peppermint tablet after a meal may help soothe heartburn. Drinking the tea will only cause more heartburn but when peppermint is coated the properties aren't released until it is in the stomach.

Chamomile Tea
Another great herb for digestion! Chamomile is a wonderful digestive aid. If you are prone to heartburn take chamomile on a regular basis in the form of tea.

Plant enzymes
Plant enzymes like those in papaya can be taken before your meals. One of the enzymes in papaya called chymopapain, aids in burns and stomach ulcers.

Papaya
Papaya fruit contains proteolytic enzymes that function in the digestion of protein. The combination of papaya and peppermint work to support the digestive system. They also make great breath fresheners!

Making Licorice Root Tea

Use 1 teaspoon root per cup of boiling water and let simmer for 20 minutes. Then strain. Do not take for longer than 6 weeks at a time. Do not take if pregnant or nursing or if you have kidney issues or cardiac issues.

Licorice Root
Twenty minutes before each meal take some licorice root. Look for deglycyrrhizinated licorice as it does not cause lead to cardiac problems as the regular licorice root. Licorice root soothes and heals the stomach and esophagus.

Mucilage Herbs
Herbs that create a bit of mucilage such as slippery elm (Ulmus fulva) or marshmallow root (Althea officinalis) are commonly used as heartburn home remedies. These mucilage herbs could be used in teas as well.
