Herbal Sleep Remedy Tea

Get some shut eye tonight with this herbal sleep remedy tea!

1 part valerian root
2 parts rooibos tea
3 parts lemon balm
1 part passionflower
3 parts chamomile

Use 4-6 Tbsp in 1 quart boiling water. Cover. Let steep 30 minutes. Strain.

Start drinking this herbal sleep remedy tea an hour before bedtime to get yourself relaxed and ready for sleep.

If you can get some of those nifty little tea bags that iron shut you can just fill a whole bunch in advance and not have have the mess of straining out the leaves. I highly recommend them!



The herbs in this sleep remedy are notorious as a sedative. In fact, in Germany a sedative is made containing valerian root, lemon balm and passionflower.

Valerian is the most popular herb for insomnia, restlessness, and anxiety. It is safe, non addictive, and very effective. There is a small percentage of people who find that valerian has the opposite effect on them. They become further agitated and restless. If you find you are in that small percentage than obviously valerian is not for you! Just leave it out.

Lemon Balm is a beautiful, fragrant herb! Do try and have a plant in your garden - the lemony fragrance is intoxicating! The leaves and flowers of lemon balm contain volatile oils that are calming to the nervous system. This herb is a mild sedative, good for insomnia.

Passionflower is another calming herb, contrary to its name! It has some analgesic effects making it useful for pain. Passionflower is one of the best herbs for anxiety, stress and depression. This herb is effective for hyperactive children also!

Chamomile is well known as being effective for children. Who doesn't remember Peter Rabbit's mother giving him chamomile tea after his stressful day in Mr. McGregor's garden? Chamomile is calming and gentle.

I just love adding rooibos leaves to my herbal tea remedies! Green tea can be used as well, but rooibos doesn't contain any stimulatory effects. Some claim that rooibos helps with insomnia and promotes restful sleep. Rooibos contains plenty of antioxidants and other good stuff!
