Nourishing Herbs For Pregnancy

Using herbs for pregnancy can be a healthy choice for mama and baby!

One of the greatest joys in a woman's life is the experience of pregnancy and birthing. I wish I had known of these herbs for pregnancy when expecting my children. However, now that my children are having children, I can help make their pregnancy and birthing experience the best it can be with herbs and some good nutritional advice.

Herbs For Fertility: These herbs have traditionally been used by women with fertility issues.

Herbs that are normally used for food can be safe for pregnancy. However, be sure to look at this list of herbs to avoid during pregnancy.

Morning Sickness Remedies

Milk Thistle is useful to boost the liver. Often the cause of morning sickness is excess hormones in the blood. The liver needs the extra support to help process excess hormones from the blood. Look for a milk thistle supplement that contains at least 80% silymarin. Silymarin is the active ingredient in milk thistle that does all that good liver cleansing.

Chamomile tea - make a thermos full the night before and have handy by the bedside.

Ginger root is controversial as a remedy for morning sickness. Only use when needed. Use an inch or two of grated ginger root steeped in boiling water as a tea.

Peppermint essential oil can be used in a diffuser in the bedroom. Peppermint is often used to treat nausea and motions sickness.

Anemia Remedies

During pregnancy, changes in a woman's blood often leave her levels of hemoglobin rather low. If she entered pregnancy with low levels, which is quite common, she is more vulnerable to anemia. Taking some extra supplementation through natural means will be helpful.

Flora-dix by FloraHealth is very beneficial for anemia in pregnancy. It doesn't cause constipation as most iron supplements do.

Some herbs that are high in iron are yellow dock and nettle. A tea can be made from either of these herbs to drink throughout the day.

Foods that are high in iron are:
  • Red meats, liver and egg yolk.
  • Red kidney beans, chickpeas, soya beans, lentils
  • Dried apricots, figs, and peaches
  • Spinach, spirulina, kelp

Pregnancy Tea

8 parts red raspberry
4 parts oatstraw
3 parts alfalfa
2 parts lemon balm

My daughter drank this Pregnancy Tea daily during her pregnancy. And she gave birth to some pretty special kids! The pregnancy herbs in this tea will supply plenty of vitamins and minerals, including iron and calcium. The raspberry leaf tones and nourishes the uterine muscles, preparing for labor and delivery.

2 parts nettle
2 parts peppermint

  1. Use 4-6 Tablespoons mixture per quart of boiling water.
  2. Cap to contain volatile oils.
  3. Allow to steep for 4 hours.
  4. Drink throughout the day.

Hemorrhoids

Many women experience hemorrhoids as a result of constipation. Constipation may begin early on in the pregnancy as hormones may relax the digestive tract.

Of course, avoiding constipation will be a natural remedy for hemorrhoids in itself. Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fiber rich foods.

Herbal sitz baths are helpful with hemorrhoids. Use anti-inflammatory herbs in a muslin bag such as chamomile, calendula, oats, and comfrey.

A Calendula Salve containing the same herbs can be helpful, too.
