Home Made Shampoo

Make your own home made shampoo with herbs and natural ingredients. It is really simple!

Many of the ingredients that are good for your skin are good for you hair as well. One thing to remember is that your hair is really an extension of your skin. It can be oily, dry, normal or a combination. Those wonderful ingredients for your skin will also benefit your hair.

Commercial hair products that you buy on the market can be extremely damaging and drying to your hair. Along with the overuse of these products your hair can be left looking lifeless, frizzy, and dull. And then there is always the health risk of certain harmful chemicals in these commercial products.

Learn to make your own shampoos and hair treatments! Although our family has been using a natural shampoo for quite some time now, I'm beginning to experiment with making shampoos and rinses. This home made shampoo recipe is great to start off with. As an added bonus it can be used as a body wash, too!

These recipes are not going to leave your hair squeeky clean. Commercial shampoos do that already by stripping away all your natural oils. Rather this homemade shampoo recipe will remove dirt and excess oils leaving your hair soft and manageable.

How to make home made shampoo:

This is a basic recipe that you can use in a variety of different ways.

home-made-shampoo
  • 6 oz herbal infusion
  • 3 oz liquid castile soap
  • 1/2 tsp shea butter
  • 1/4 tsp carrier oil
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable glycerin
  • up to 60-70 drops essential oils

  1. Make an infusion or tea of 1 Tablespoon herbs and one cup boiling water.
  2. Let steep 4 hours. Strain.
  3. Heat the infusion slightly and add shea butter. Heat until melted.
  4. Add rest of ingredients.
  5. Pour into a covered bottle and shake well. Shake before each use.
  6. Store in fridge if not using up within 2 weeks.

You can play around with different combinations until the cows come home! Use what you have in your garden!

Herbal Infusions - This is basically a tea. The following herbs are just a few of which can be used in hair treatments. Many of them you can grow in your own garden:

Castile soap - The cleansing action in shampoo. Be aware, however, that castile soap is still a soap and does contain alkali which can strip natural oils from the scalp. However, it is still a good alternative to regular soap and shampoos.

Shea Butter - Wonderfully luxurious! Shea butter is a rich emollient and great for dry, damaged hair.

Carrier oil - This is any oil that provides emollient, cleansing effects. Good choices for oily hair are sesame or grapeseed oil. Good choices for dry hair are jojoba. Normal hair can benefit from olive oil. If you tend to have dry hair, increase the oil, if you tend to have oily hair, decrease.

Vegetable Glycerin - Glycerin gives shampoo a bit of lather, otherwise there isn't much lather.

Essential oils - Besides smelling great, essential oils for hair provides some therapeutic action as well. Tea tree essential oil can be used for dandruff or itch. Or try some of these combinations:

10 drops each lemongrass e.o and tea tree e.o., 15 drops grapefruit e.o.

30 drops lavender e.o., 20 drops chamomile e.o.

20 drops each tea tree, lavender and rosemary e.o.
