Home Remedies For Nail Fungus

Home remedies for nail fungus that use some simple ingredients and lots of patience and persistence.

Thick, yellowish-brown nails and toenails are the usual symptoms of a toenail fungus or tinea unguium. Some have had toenail fungus for years and years without being able to find a solution to the fungus.

Conventional medical treatment requires taking a antifungal medicine for a considerable length of time. This appears to be effective however, it is costly and toxic to the liver. Try these home remedies for toenail fungus first. If you do decide to go with a drug from your doctor, be sure to use a liver support herb, such as milk thistle seed.

Nail fungus is usually an indicator of a yeast overgrowth in our systems. So, not only do we want to look at applying external treatments to the nail we also want to address the sugar issues, which yeast is. Read more about those issues on my page about athlete's foot.

The same treatments for athlete's foot can be used for toenail fungus. However, some extra steps can be used because this fungus problem is no easy fix. Dr. James Balch suggests this home therapy for severe toenail fungus in his book "Prescription for Natural Cures".

Toenail Fungus Treatment

  1. Trim the nails short.
  2. Try to thin the nail by using some type of dremal tool. Thickened nails are resistant to any kind of topical application.
  3. Make a bleach solution of 1 cup bleach to 10 cups water.
  4. Place the affected area in the bucket for 5 seconds and remove. Dry off.
  5. Repeat every other day for 4 weeks with a new bleach solution. Don't use this solution if you have open wounds on your skin.
  6. Continue with the solution of tea tree or oregano oil on the affected area followed by calendula ointment.
