Home Remedies For PsoriasisHome remedies for psoriasis that work internally and externally.
No one really knows for sure what causes psoriasis.
The most common theory is one of genetics.
But what is psoriasis exactly, anyways? Psoriasis occurs when skin cells replicate at a much quicker rate than the rate that old skin cells slough off. All these new cells pile up creating red patchy swollen areas covered with white or silver scales. These scaly patches show up mainly on the elbows, the knees, the scalp, the buttocks, and the backs of wrists. It usually is not itchy but if it is scratched it may bleed. It tends go through periods of flare-ups and remission. Even though there isn't an exact known cause of psoriasis there does appear to be factors that play into the determining the severity and the frequency of this common skin disorder. Some of these factors are:
Our bodies are designed to eliminate toxins through the skin, the urinary tract and through the bowels. In the case of psoriasis we need to focus on eliminating the toxins through the latter two avenues rather than through the skin. Also certain nutritional supplements will help support the skin in the areas of inflammation and to help with detoxification.
Certain foods may need to be avoided in helping to prevent flare ups. These foods are: Proteins found in red meat, poultry and dairy products. Since people with psoriasis have difficulty digesting protein these are the types of foods that may need to be avoided. The red meat and dairy also contain an acid which may aggravate inflammation. Processed, refined, sugary foods. These foods are all difficult to digest. Remember we want to help the body to release toxins, not overload it with more toxins! Alcohol and caffeine can trigger psoriasis so limiting the intake or avoiding these are necessary. Food allergies also have a part to play in psoriasis. Common foods are sugar, citrus fruits, gluten, and dairy. Home Remedies For PsoriasisBesides the above mentioned nutritional supplements and diet, lessening stress and employing certain herbs will help with psoriasis. Use adaptogenic herbs or any of the herbs for anxiety and lifestyle changes if stress is a factor in your life.Milk Thistle is helpful for supporting the liver with detoxification. An overtaxed liver can not properly cleanse the blood. This often shows up as skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Burdock, licorice, sarsparilla, calendula, and chamomile are all therapeutic herbs for psoriasis. Sarsparilla and burdock can be taken internally. This greatly benefits the blood as it has detoxification benefits. Alternatively, soak a small muslin bag containing burdock, licorice, sarsparilla, calendula, or chamomile and apply topically to the psoriasis areas. Calendula salve: I show you how to make this multipurpose salve. Calendula is very beneficial for skin issues due to its anti inflammatory and vulnerary properties. Aloe vera gel can also be applied topically to benefit from its anti-inflammatory effects. Growing your own aloe vera plant would be very useful for home remedies for psoriasis! Periods of mild sunlight may be helpful in improving psoriasis. Combine the sunshine with walking to alleviate stress as well. You can get quality dried herbs at Mountain Rose Herbs
