Sinus Infection Treatment

Sinus infections are no fun, but this simple sinus infection treatment shown here will help alleviate congestion and clear up infections.

Sinus infections are no fun, but these simple sinus infection treatments will help alleviate congestion and clear up infections.

Roughly 90% of adults have had or will have a sinus infection at some point in their lives.

A sinus infection (also known as sinusitis) is an inflammation of the sinuses and may be the result of:

  • respiratory infections
  • fungi
  • viruses
  • bacteria
  • food and environmental allergies
  • Breathing through the nose is difficult because of swelling of the membranes in the nasal passages and sinuses. Which in turn prevents mucous from draining. These moist, blocked sinuses are the perfect environment for an infection to begin.

Some of the symptoms of sinusitis are: sinus-infection-treatment

  • Pressure around the sinuses
  • Headache or facial pain, especially when bent over
  • Green discharge from the nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Please see a doctor if you have repeated problems with sinus infections or if it doesn't clear up with these remedies. There may be other issues involved.

    Prevention

Usually sinusitis develops after a cold so take care of yourself during a cold. Boost the immune system and keep the upper respiratory tract clear. Good herbs for the immune system are:

  • Astragalus
  • Goldenseal or Oregon Grape Root
  • Echinacea
  • Those who have a tendency to sinus infections or who have allergies may find that a daily nasal irrigation(see below) will be a good preventative measure.

    Oil of Oregano
One of my favorite things to do when any type of respiratory problems arise is to deeply breathe in Oil of Oregano through the nose. Oil of Oregano opens the clogged nasal passages and thins out the mucous. It is very powerful in killing fungi, viruses and bacteria. Avoid if pregnant.

    Nasal Irrigation
This is a very effective remedy for clearing out the nasal passages and often recommended for people suffering from sinusitis. Basically a saline solution is used in lukewarm water and poured in one nostril. The liquid travels through and cleans out mucous.

    Eucalyptus or Peppermint Steam
Breathing in the vapors of an herbal steam will moisten the nasal passages and facilitate easier breathing.

    Garlic
Nothing beats garlic for infections. Take odourless garlic capsules or eat a lot of garlic throughout the day! Garlic will help to fight infections and boost the immune system.

Hydrotherapy Give yourself a hydrotherapy treatment and then rub garlic oil on your feet. Go directly to bed. The garlic will combat the infection, the hydrotherapy treatment will loosen the sinus congestion.

White Willow Bark or Valerian Tincture
Pain from sinus infections will lessen as the congestion is cleared up and infections are dealt with through the above treatments. However, don’t hesitate to use a white willow bark or valerian tincture to deal with the pain in the meantime.
